Nitrates and Drinking Water
Private drinking water wells in Morrow County and Umatilla County may contain high levels of a group of chemicals called nitrates.
High level of nitrates in drinking water can cause health problems in humans, including respiratory and reproductive diseases, as well as kidney, spleen and thyroid problems. Nitrates are most harmful to infants and those who are pregnant.
When water has nitrate levels above 10 parts per million (ppm), water users should drink bottled water or get a water filter that removes nitrates. Residents who have a high level of nitrates in their well water should not boil their water. Boiling does not get rid of nitrate.
To get a free nitrate test for your water, call 2-1-1 to or request a test online on the Oregon Health Authority’s website:
