Criminal Investigations
The Criminal Investigations Unit consists of a criminal sergeant and two deputies assigned to narcotics and general criminal investigation duties. The criminal investigation deputy works generally on crimes against persons such as Homicide, Assault, and Child Abuse. Investigators also work fraud and elder abuse cases, execute search warrants and assist with major property crime investigations.
Investigators are members of the Umatilla/Morrow Major Crimes team which investigates homicides, officer involved shootings and other major incidents within the two counties. Investigators have been utilized to assist with other events such as Pendleton Round-Up street emphasis patrols.
The Narcotics Deputy is assigned to the Blue Mountain Enforcement Narcotics Team, referred to as BENT. BENT is multi-jurisdiction drug task force serving Umatilla and Morrow Counties. BENT investigates and enforces state and federal drug laws.
Participating BENT agencies include Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Pendleton Police Department, Hermiston Police Department, Milton-Freewater Police Department, Umatilla Tribal Police Department, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Boardman Police Department, Oregon State Police and FBI.
The goal of BENT is to detect, disrupt, dismantle and apprehend drug trafficking organizations and individuals actively engaged in manufacture and delivery of controlled substances. BENT gathers and disseminates narcotics and related criminal intelligence to participating entities and other criminal justice/law enforcement agencies affected by the information; and work to enhance and maintain cooperative efforts among criminal justice agencies charged with investigating and prosecuting criminal activities nationwide.
In 2015, BENT made 87 arrests, seized $217,955.00 in marijuana, $507,497.00 in methamphetamine/ice, $198,318.00 in heroin, $8,535.00 in cocaine, and seized 27 firearms.
In 2016, BENT made 109 arrests, seized $1,393,505.00 in marijuana, $873,617.00 in methamphetamine/ice, $55,953.00 in heroin, $111,400.00 in cocaine, and seized 28 firearms.
In 2017, BENT made 131 arrests, seized $25,708.00 in marijuana, $250,039.00 in methamphetamine/ice, $123,408.00 in heroin, $84,000.00 in cocaine, and seized 15 firearms.
